"Shady Lady" was too tempting for several B-24 crews leading to confusion. This Shady Lady has been confused with 42-40369 which operated out of Darwin, Australia. 42-40212 was attached to the 370th BS/307th BG which operated out of Henderson Field in the Solomon Islands and Espiritu Santo in what is now Vanuatu. This was the region in where the RNZAF was active during World War II, unlike Darwin. 42-40212 was broken up in August 1944. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

Built to USAAF order as 44-41956 but delivered to the RAAF in 1945 as A72-176. Disposed of for scrap in 1948, the fuselage of this Liberator was recovered from a farm near Sale where it had been since 1952. Restoration commenced in 1988 and considerable progress has been made. The airframe is substantially complete inside and out (although the tailplane and fins are stored separately for the time being), and the flight deck is temporarily set up as a separate display.

Delivered to Duxford from Poona AB October 28th 1973 for maintenance/re-painting. Delivered to USA from Duxford August 27th 1975. Displayed at the Fantasy of Flight in Florida in 2025. After over 50 years on the seabed, the cockpit of a USAAF Liberator was still remarkably complete and salvaged in 1995. Built in December 1942 at San Diego, this USAAF Liberator was attacked over Romania on 1 August 1943. Badly damaged, the crew headed for their base at Benghazi in Libya but one by one the engines failed and the aircraft ditched in the sea off Antalya (Turkey).
