The Shiden or 'George' was unusually developed from a floatplane fighter, the N1K Kyofu or 'Rex'. It was a formidable dogfighting aircraft, despite technical issues that were solved in the N1K2-J Shiden Kai with low-set wing. This is assumed to be c/n 5511, Imperial Japanese Navy tail code 201-53, which was captured in the Philippines in January 1945 and given identification number S7 by TAIU-SWPA at Clark Field. It only flew once as such as the undercarriage collapsed on landing. Note that US insignia are a bit off, with old-fashioned rudder striping serving as a warning to Allied pilots. Struck off charge in 1952. This may have been paperwork catching up and it could have already been scrapped. 21 Squadron's aircraft had been stored at Tocumwal, NSW, from 1946 and there was large scale scrapping of B-24s there around 1950. Photo from: Library and Archives NT

Emirau Island airport was built as two adjoining airstrips - Northern Cape for bombers, which is the one in the photo, and Inshore for fighters. The two were connected by a taxiway. The airfields now are considered to be one airport and in use. Satellite photos show Northern Cape's runway is less neglected than Inshore. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

Fairchild borrowed a truck from the Statton furniture company to show the potential of the C-82. It was underpowered, however, and it took time to rework the design as the C-119 Flying Boxcar.
