Airlines in Botswana is an interesting story. Bechuanaland National Airways existed between 1965 and 1966 before going out of business. Then in 1966 Botswana National Airways entered the stage. However, they lasted only three years. In 1970 and 1971 it was Botswana Airways. Since 1972 it has been Air Botswana. VQ-ZEG is seen here at Lusaka in June of 1968 having been delivered in January. It reached Britain in February 1945 and was sent to No 232 Sqn in India together with KL978. Uncle Sam wanted these capable Lend-Lease transports back after the end of the war and KL977 became a US Navy R5D-3, 91994. Seen outside BOAC's hangar at Heathrow with the UK registration taped on, RRAF-161 was delivered to the Royal Rhodesian Air Force's 3 Sqd on 18 February 1960. The RRAF was the air force of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (today's Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe). The Canadairs, as they were known locally, formed part or the Federation's commitment to the British forces in the Middle East. VH-INX soon after arrival from Melbourne-Essendon. It had been trucked to Melton to be converted to an airport cafe. Sometime in 1972 the undercarriage retracted and it lay on its belly with the Ansett-ANA markings blacked out. Back on its undercarriage the tail was painted white but from then on it was all downhill. Parts went missing including the cargo doors and the rudder and the paint flaked off. INX eventually fell back on its tail and remained that way until scrapped in the early 1990s.
