Originally designated YF-96A, it featured the fuselage of the last production F-84E fitted with sweptback wing and horizontal tail. Note the round intake of the f-84E as opposed to the ovular intake of production F-84Fs. The change was required to accommodate the increased airflow needs of the more powerful J65 engine which replaced the J35 of the F-84E and YF-96A.Iit's last use was in the development of the FICON parasite fighter for the B-36 with the addition of a nose hook and negative dihedral on the horizontal tail surfaces.

K-72 (Bu30194) saw action during WW2, and on April 18, 1945, dropped an acoustic torpedo against a German U-Boat. Although a destroyer heard an explosion no debris surfaced so it was not credited with a kill. Seen here at the 1953 Dayton Air Show, with "Join the US Naval Reserve - Be a Naval Aviation Cadet" titles.

For some reason it's painted as B-36B 44-92065, but it is in fact 51-13730. In 1992 this aircraft was disassembled and shipped to the Castle Air Museum in California where it is currently on display as the only RB 0f the 4 remaining B-36s.

Seen at Chanute AFB, IL in 1957 after being retired from active service with the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, SD. The red tail band is the color of the 718th Bomb Squadron, the unit to which I was assigned. I may have flown on this aircraft but can't be sure, because our flight records did not have tail numbers listed.

When this photo was taken at the National Air Show in Philadelphia in Septermber 1955, I was in flight training at Keesler AFB, MS to become an ECM Operator in SAC... on the RB-36H! It's possible that I later flew on this very aircraft as it was once in our squadron at Ellsworth AFB, SD. In 1957 it was put on display at Chanute AFB, IL and in 1991 was transported in pieces by rail to the Castle Air Museum, CA. Once restored it placed on display there, where it remains today. Of the 4 surviving B-36s, this is the only RB model.

The second of two prototypes, this Piasecki YH-16A Transporter broke apart in mid-air on 5 January 1956, when the rear rotor shaft failed, allowing the blades to desynchronize and wobble into the plane of those of the forward rotor. Although the cause of the failure was determined not to be a design defect the program was scrapped.

This sole example flew cargo for the USAF from 1950 to 1957 before being retired. Seen on display at the National Air Show in Philadelphia. The SAAMA logo on the fin refers to San Antonio Air Materiel Area.
