The Spanish government ordered the first six Dornier Wal flying boats, built at Marina di Pisa in Italy, off the drawing board. In 1926 three of these made a return flight to Equatorial Guinea, including W-5 which was at that time named Cataluña. W-5 was written off after a landing accident at Melilla in 1929. A man seems to be riding in the engine bay forward of the radiator here. IWM could not identify this aircraft and the only link with Britain seem to be the Rolls-Roye Eagle engines. A65-123 was attached to No. 86 Transport Wing when the wing was transferred to Canberra in a VIP role. 1954 was the year Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia. Due to lack of suitable RAAF aircraft, a Qantas Constellation and a TAA Convair 240 were chartered. But for smaller airports A65-123 was used. It had the Queen's crest in place of the 86 Wing crest. A23-123 continued in a VIP role (with 34 Squadron) until 1968 when it was transferred to the Navy as N2-123. Kangaroo roundels replaced the RAF roundels in 1956. A52-319 at Perth after its delivery flight to its new home . Owned by Jimmy Woods, it was soon registered VH-WAD. That lasted a few weeks before its provisional CoA was cancelled and it was struck of the register. VH-WAD sat in the open at Perth Airport until 1971. In 1972 it was being shipped to a new US owner when a dispute over payment of shipping costs saw it offloaded in Melbourne. Sat rotting away in the open until 1979 when the Australian War Memorial bought it. Now restored and displayed at the AWM in Canberra. Photo from: State Library of Western Australia

The Manchester was the twin-engined precursor of the Lancaster. One of the troublesome Rolls-Royce Vulture engines is being worked on here. Unfortunately IWM do not provide known dates for many of their photographs, but L7279, the fourth production aircraft, was the first Manchester to be delivered to No 207 Sqn at Waddington on 6 November 1940 and the photo was taken soon thereafter. L7279 flew only a single combat mission before being relegated to training duties. Photo by: Bertrand John Daventry / Imperial War Museums

Used to carry tourists to Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth. Flights stopped when Ansons were barred from carrying passengers or flying over water. After a failed attempt to sell VH-WAB to the Dutch air force in Dutch New Guinea, it was donated to a farming friend of Jimmy Woods as a play thing for children. By 1969 it was derelict and by 1974 had been removed to the tip. Photo from: State Library of Western Australia

Part of the RAF's Long-Range Development Unit Flight that flew non-stop from Egypt to Australia. L2638 was LR1, the lead aircraft. The library caption on this photo says it is at RAAF Pearce but by the time the remaining two LRDU aircraft arrived at Pearce L2638 had already been written off. It had suffered an engine failure near Richmond, NSW. Date of this incident is unclear. The damaged L2638 was dismantled and shipped back to the UK from Sydney.
