At the time of the photo VH-BLS, which had operated as a freighter, had not been registered since 1949. BLS and sister ship VH-BKA did amass a debt for hangarage at Bankstown which might explain its good condition. Both Ansons were ferried to Evans Head for storage before BLS was ferried to Moorabbin for rebuilding. It emerged from that rebuild in early 1955 as a passenger aircraft fitted with the smooth engine cowlings from an Airspeed Oxford. A few months later the registration was cancelled as withdrawn from use. Debt from storage at Bankstown and Evans Head may have been a factor.

A4-28 was a pre-World War II delivery to the RAAF as a general reconnaissance aircraft. Soon after the war started, the RAAF replaced Ansons in this role with Lockheed Hudsons. A4-28 was transferred to training units where it was joined by the 1000 Ansons shipped to Australia as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme. It was scrapped after the war. Reregistered VH-DOB in February 1961. The buyer complained that he was unaware of the impending grounding of wooden-winged Ansons. VH-DOB was left with Robby's at Parafield until it was dismantled in 1964. The fuselage was stored at a St Johns Ambulance station at Hindmarsh and the rest burnt. The fuselage was scrapped in 1967. At the time of the photo, VH-BMD was owned by Amphibious Airways of Papua New Guinea. Records show it never left Sydney at that time. It did eventually reach PNG in 1954 when owned by Papuan Air Transport. BMD swung on landing at Embi on December 18, 1954 and was written off. The smoke is from a steam train. In 1952 a goods line passed through the airport and crossed one of the runways. The track was later moved to take it outside the airport. It remained in use in 2025. This is the only remaining airworthy Anson I and is now owned and operated by RAF Station Czechoslovakia. It is pictured landing on rw09 at LKPD to make its public debut in the Northern Hemisphere at Aviatická pouť 2025. The plane was built in 1943 and after its wartime service flew as VH-BAF. It was restored to flying condition between 2003 to 2012 and registered ZK-RRA. However, the New Zealand owners decided to sell so it was transported to, and re-assembled in Belgium for acceptance before flying to its new owners home base at Podhorany (LKPN).

VH-BKA had been ferried into Evans Head from Bankstown airport for storage in the former RAAF hangars on the aerodrome. Its previous flight had been in 1948 when it was ferried to Bankstown from Geelong. Struck off register in 1951 as unairworthy. Continuing non-payment of hangarage fees at Bankstown and Evans Head saw BKA evicted from its hangar in 1956. It very quickly succumbed to the elements . Dave Eyre photo
