The Manchester was the twin-engined precursor of the Lancaster. One of the troublesome Rolls-Royce Vulture engines is being worked on here. Unfortunately IWM do not provide known dates for many of their photographs, but L7279, the fourth production aircraft, was the first Manchester to be delivered to No 207 Sqn at Waddington on 6 November 1940 and the photo was taken soon thereafter. L7279 flew only a single combat mission before being relegated to training duties. Photo by: Bertrand John Daventry / Imperial War Museums

An Avro Manchester bomber stands centre with its two RR Vulture engines removed for servicing by Avros. Note the centre fin, later deleted when larger twin elliptical fins were fitted. A Hawker Hector of the based Central Landing Establishment is at left. A CLE Hotspur glider is landing after a demonstration for Winston Churchill. The vintage fuel pumps are protected by sandbags. Obtained from Manchester Airport over 40 years ago.
