Part of the RAF long-range flight of three aircraft that flew non-stop from Ismailia, Egypt, to Darwin Australia in November 1938. L2638 was on a test flight out of RAAF Richmond on November 28 when it suffered engine trouble. and landed in a tomato crop. The aircraft was dismantled and taken back to Richmond. It was back to the UK. One of the other two (L3680) was also shipped back to the UK. The third (L3639) was substantially damaged in a forced landing in Western Australia. It remained in Australia as an instructional airframe until scrapped in 1944.

Part of the RAF's Long-Range Development Unit Flight that flew non-stop from Egypt to Australia. L2638 was LR1, the lead aircraft. The library caption on this photo says it is at RAAF Pearce but by the time the remaining two LRDU aircraft arrived at Pearce L2638 had already been written off. It had suffered an engine failure near Richmond, NSW. Date of this incident is unclear. The damaged L2638 was dismantled and shipped back to the UK from Sydney.
