F-AJAI flew in the Middle East with Air France and the Société des Transports du Proche-Orient (STPO). In 1937 it was bought by Capt Georges Goumin, who served at Rayak in Lebanon. Goumin was recalled to France in 1938 and led a group of pilots escaping to England in 1940. Wearing the cream and orange colours of STPO with the logo of the Aéro-Club Maurice Noguès in Damascus, F-AJAI is seen during a trip to Luxor. The pilot here may still be Goumin, even if the given 1939 date is corect, according to researcher Michel Barrière. Registration allegedly stricken in April 1939. In 1942 the aircraft served with the Free French forces as FL-AUM. Photo from: Gérald Garitan

Roscoe Turner in the Meteor racer that was built for him. The photo must have been taken in 1939 as Champion was his sponsor that year. Almost 44 years old, Turner announced his retirement from racing after winning the 1939 Thompson Trophy race. The Meteor is in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC since 2022. The second Grumman Goose, owned by Henry Morgan, one of ten affluent Long Island businessmen who requested the design of the G-21. Morgan's wife and friends made a trip all the way to Texas in the aircraft. Like other early Geese it was acquired by the Canadian air force in 1940. Blenheim I K7072 was converted to the Blenheim IV prototype with a longer nose and first flown as such on 24 September 1937. This photo is said to be from 1939 and we think it may have been taken in Canada where K7072 was sent as a pattern aircraft for the Canadian-built Bolingbroke. The Blenheim IV had been named Bolingbroke initially in Britain. Photo from: Life

The Potez 63 in its basic form was a three-seat fighter, crewed by a pilot, a gunner and a commander who was supposed to direct formations of single-seat fighters. The initial Potez 630 version suffered from unreliable Hispano-Suiza 14Ab engines and was relegated to training duties.

First flown on 26 May 1938, the Si 202 Hummel (bumblebee) was a wooden light sport aircraft with side-by-side seating. The Si 202B had a 50-hp Zundapp engine and D-EMDR set some altitude records in its class early in 1939. Photo assumed taken around that time. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

The pilot's name on the plane is Aviation Cadet George H. Carter. The normal complement of a Navy squadron in 1939 was 18 planes, so this is a rare photo.
