Schiphol one year after the war, with an armada of British Austin K2/Y ambulances. The shiny 1939 DC-3 of Swissair, HB-IRE, contrasts with the untitled olive drab KLM C-47A, PH-TBH, ex 42-100731. It became MM61766 in 1950 and is preserved at Vigna di Valle. On the far right are several C-54s, including NL-307. See crop for DC-3 PH-TBD and DC-4 PH-TAT. There are also two DH.89s in the picture. Damaged over Berlin, B-17F 42-3490 headed for Sweden and landed in Malmö on 21 June 1944. One of seven B-17s converted to F-17 Felix transports by Saab, SE-BAN was used by SILA, a company merged into SAS in 1948. Withdrawn from use in October 1948 and scrapped in 1950. The reason of this visit to Schiphol is not certain, but other photos show children in winter clothing who were possibly given a holiday in Sweden. 'Members of the General Commison [for the Netherlands East Indies] have left for Indonesia again by KLM plane.' NL-312 is still in military uniform but on the far right is PH-TAA, ex NL-303, already in KLM livery. The NGAT aircraft always had paper PH registrations. NL-312 never wore PH-TAN, as this was changed to PH-TBT in February 1946. The Skymasters were formally transferred to KLM in August 1947 but as PH-TAA shows, repainting started earlier. The source wrongly states that this photo shows the departure of Skymaster '313' to the East Indies with members of parliament in 1946. Since the aircraft is NL-300, what we see here is almost certainly the departure of the first postwar flight to the East Indies (Indonesia) on 10 November 1945, captained by KLM chief pilot Dirk Parmentier. This L-12A was built by Lockheed as NC16077 in October 1939. It was shipped to England in April 1939 aboard the SS Aquitania, registered G-AFTL for photographic duties around Europe and North Africa. This plane was the last British registered aircraft to leave Germany before the start of WWII. After the outbreak of the war it retained its civil reg. and was used as a camera ship and to test the efficiency of aircraft reporting system. It was badly damaged when a parachuted mine hit the hangar at Heston so returned to Lockheed for repairs. It would not return to UK skies again until March 2022.
