This An-2 was delivered to the Ukranian directorate of Aeroflot in August 1974 as CCCP-07696. It was originally intended to be placed on to the Hungarian register as HA-DAG, but instead became HA-MKG with Dél-Dunántuli AS in August 1996. This may or may not be the current owner but it was parked on the grass as LHBC during my visit.

Photo probably taken in 1951 - the source says 1950 but this Constellation was not delivered until the last days of 1950 and the scene does not look winterish. Note 'Trans World Airline' title even though the airline pluralized its name already on 17 May 1950. Photo by: René Gardi / ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The DC-3 was built in 1938. In that same year, Bachmann, Blumenthal & Co Flugzeugbau (BBF) began manufacture of aircraft parts at this airfield, taking over a Gotha plant. Nuremberg's commercial airport was then Marienberg, which took over from the old Fürth / Nuremberg - Atzenhof airport in 1933. The industrial airfield served as a temporary airport from 1950, until the modern airport (EDNN) opened in 1955. Photo by: René Gardi / ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

News photo focussing on the Thai prime minister, Marshal Phibunsongkhram. The Constellation served as Eisenhower's presidential aircraft, 48-610 Columbine II, from November 1952 until November 1954. The USAF loaned it to Pan Am for just two months in 1955, apparently specifically for the Thai leader's 'long trip abroad' to the United States and Europe. This photo probably shows an accident that occurred after 8709 was disposed of by the RCAF. The accident is not in its RCAF records and it had in fact been stored pending disposal since 1945. 8709 was sold as CF-DUV in June 1946 and was cancelled from the register in 1949 as "written off". The caption on the photo says it was flying to Fraser Valley when it crashed on the dairy farm. Photo from: Revelstoke Museum and Archives

On 30 January 1970, the two ex-TAA Viscounts at Southend, VH-TVD & VH-TVF, were moved from the centre of the airfield to a site on the North side of the airfield (as depicted above), where they were completely stripped of all useful spares prior to scrapping. The latter task had commenced by 7 February 1970, both fuselages having been severed aft of the wing trailing edge. By 15 February the two aircraft had been reduced to a fast-diminishing heap of scrap, which had completely disappeared by 21 February 1970.
