Ex 43-16413 and K-5 of the Belgian air force, this one was in Dutch service from 1952 to 1962. It seems that two different KLM C-47s, PH-TBV and TBX, saw temporary military duty as X-2 earlier. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

Photographer unknown. This evocative scene depicts this KLM "Seven Seas" starting engines at New York Idlewild. To the left are KLM L-749 Constellation PH-LDE and a TWA L-1649 Starliner, while on the upper right a Lufthansa L-1049 is parked. An American Electra can also be seen taxiing across the airport. The main subject of the photo, PH-DSB, flew with KLM only from 1957 to 1962. It then passed through the hands of several second-line owners before eventually being broken up at Fort Worth/Amon Carter in 1974.

Probably here on a MATS charter, for which it was employed from June 1958 to August 1959. It later flew with Trans International and Capitol so would have been seen quite a lot in Europe. Ceased flying operationally in 1968 and was last known of stored at Sebring/FL as shown here.

Here on delivery ferry and flew with Northeast until 1964 when it was registered to Charlie Rich of country music fame. Eventually it ended up as XA-SCM in June 1992 and was destroyed on 27 July 1992 when it was flown into mountains on approach to Mexico City. [Minuscule registrations like the one here (upper of two center stripes) were eventually banned by the FAA.]

Destined for Philippine Air Lines. It's interesting to speculate why it has the customer registration on it before painting in PAL livery. If it was for test flying it could have worn a B-Class registration instead. Perhaps the original intention was to deliver it unpainted since there was a clandestine CIA connection to the story of the PAL fleet.
