Forced landed on remote Sable Island after the crew realised returning to their base at Dartmouth was no longer possible. Reports say the aircraft landed in a freshwater lagoon and a lighthouse keeper altered authorities. The crew were flown back to base in a Catalina but the aircraft was abandoned. This USAAF Liberator took part in the bombing raid on the petroleum refineries in Ploesti, Romania, on 1/8/43. Damaged by a Luftwaffe fighter, it ditched near Antalya off the southern coast of Turkey on its return flight to Cyprus. The airframe was salvaged in 1995 and partially restored for display in the museum as a permanent memorial to the raid. The pilot (Lt Gilbert Hadley), co-pilot (Lt James Lindsey), and bombardier ((Leon Storms) were killed in the crash, the remaining seven crew were able to swim ashore and survived.

41-28678 crashed in the Netherlands on March 22, 1944, with engine problems while returning from a raid on the BMW factory in Berlin. Some sources say this photo shows the aircraft returning from 458th BG's 200th mission. However that did not take place until February 26, 1945. Ballpoint tycoon Milton Reynolds took this Liberator Express to China hoping to prove that Mt. Amne Machin was higher than Mt. Everest. On take-off from Peking the aircraft was slightly damaged when its right main gear failed or was inadvertently retracted, as seen here. The party ran into problems with the authorities and escaped to Japan with the aircraft a few days later. This was allocated to the USAAF as C-87A 43-30570, but instead went to the US Navy as RY-1 BuNo 67798, in 1944. Became NL5151N in Feb 1948.
