Seen outside the Dickie Fritz Shellhole in Edenvale in the East Rand just outside Johannesburg, this Ventura was delivered to the US Navy as 34759 and then given the RAF serial FP607. It never served with the RAF, but was transferred directly to the SAAF where it served in various roles including as an instructional airframe. Put on display during the 1980s at the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) Dickie Fritz Shellhole, so named after two friends Dickie Dashwood and Fritz von Linsingen who were killed in the Battle of Bardia in the North African Campaign of World War 2. About to touch down on Runway 23 at its XV Squadron base at RAF Lossiemouth. Carries the pennant of WG Cdr J P Nixon and the crest "MacRobert's Reply". After losing one son in a flying accident, Lady MacRobert lost two sons on active RAF service during WWII and donated aircraft in their memory. One aircraft was a Stirling bomber of XV Sqn, defiantly named "MacRobert's Reply". The Squadron has continued the tradition. The fin stripe is Robertson Hunting tartan.

Built in the USA as a homebuilt project, this aircraft first flew as N264 in 1992 and imported into New Zealand by Peter Jackson as ZK-JNU in May 2002. It was subsequently repainted to represent the aircraft of Captain C Jones of 16 Squadron of the RFC in 1918, with the serial number B1112/F. It was sold to Australia in May 2015 where it now flies as VH-IIZ. (With thanks to nzcivair.blogspot.com for the above).

Note the F-16 kill mark on the nose. Did they really manage to shoot down a F-16?
