A89-304 photographed exercising with the RNZAF off Fiji where the New Zealanders stationed Sunderland flying boats. The museum dates the photo as 1961 but it is known the the aircraft did not have a white top in September that year. It is recorded two RAAF P-2E transitted Fiji twice in August 1962 on a visit to the US and were hosted by the RNZAF. It is not known if A89-304 was one of them. A89-304 was scrapped at Bankstown airport in 1968. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

Test pilot John Derry in the cockpit. Photo print dated 20 July 1950, but VZ831 was already delivered in October 1949. The Devon/Dove in the centre background seems to be G-ALFM. VP961 was registered to the Air Ministry as G-ALFM between December 1948 and March 1949. Dove production was at Hatfield until 1951. The photo was certainly taken before 6 September 1952 when Derry lost his life in the horrific DH.110 crash at Farnborough which killed 29 people on the ground too. Photo from: De Havilland

One of three Coronados used by Varig. They had been ordered by REAL in 1960. Varig operated the Boeing 707 and the DC-8 too and did not want to take delivery of the CV-990, claiming that it could not operate from São Paulo - Congonhas at maximum take-off weight as promised, but Convair proved that it could. PP-VJE to Alaskan Airlines in 1967 as N987AS. Leased to Aerovias Ecuatorianas in 1968. To Modern Air in 1969 as N5603. Crashed at Acapulco in 1970 after a ferry flight. The first prototype of the XCG-20 troop glider, rebuilt as the XC-123 with two R-2800 piston engines. It first flew as such probably on 14 October 1949, although Joe Baugher's site only says that it was damaged while landing on that date. It crashed on 27 June 1951. The C-123 Provider was eventually produced by Fairchild. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Not taken up by Lufthansa because the prohibition on West German aviation had not been lifted yet - the first two CV-340s to be delivered, D-ACAD and D-ACAH, arrived in Hamburg on 29 November 1954. This airframe was sold to the Union Carbide company. Its long list of operators does include the Luftwaffe from 1962 until 1973. Nose preserved at Cradle of Aviation Museum and painted in - different - Lufthansa livery.

Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Caged Tiger at Malton during 1941 - this is our oldest photo so far from Toronto's future airport. Assigned to No 1 Elementary Flying Training School in February, 4398 had an accident on 23 June so the photo was probably taken before that date - by October it was with the Test and Development Establishment at Rockcliffe. We have another photo of this airframe from there. Struck off charge and put into storage in January 1945. Photo from: Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada

NZ2411 was delivered to the RNZAF in August 1945. It was assembled but with the end of World War II not needed. In early 1946 the aircraft was encased in a rubberised cocoon where it remain until 1952. To give the reservist Territory Air Force a combat capability, NZ2411 and other stored P-51s were removed from their cocoons and handed to TAF squadrons. On December 22, 1953, NZ2411 crashed at Tongaporutu i on a flight from Ohakea to Whenuapai after the pilot became disorientated in cloud and lost control. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
