Marine Airways was formed in Juneau in July 1936 and NC196N arrived in August. In 1939, Marine Airways and Alaska Air Transport joined forces, but their new name Alaska Coastal Airlines was not used until 1941 it seems. Photo taken on the Juneau waterfront, very close to the current seaplane base. NC196N operated on wheels occasionally and here they are about to hoist it up to put the floats back on. NC196N was called 'Shaky Jake' as it suffered from a persistent vibration. Nevertheless, it served the people of Juneau for over 30 years. It was preserved in Canada as CF-ATN. Russell Boardman intended to depart on a transatlantic flight with this aircraft in the weekend of 5 September 1930 but it was severely damaged when catching fire during refuelling at Boston on 4 September (not 2 September). NR761W was rebuilt at a cost of some $25,000 and flew all the way from New York to Istanbul non-stop in July 1931, no longer promoting the 1930 American Legion Convention in Boston. Used for two eastbound transatlantic crossings in 1931 and 1934. The first was flown by Capt Holger Hoérüs with passenger Otto Hillig, of Liberty, NY, who owned it. The plane was named after the town. The destination was Copenhagen but fog forced a diversion to Germany. The second flight was by Polish brothers Bolesław and Jozef Adamowicz. Bellancas made amazing long-distance flights. Cape Cod flew 8066 km (5012 miles) non-stop from New York to Istanbul in July 1931, piloted by Russell Boardman and John Polando. The J-300 was a long-range version of the CH-300 Pacemaker. Repainted in orange and maroon in preparation, NR13137 took off for a non-stop transatlantic flight to Rome on 13 May 1937, but pilots George Pond and Cesare Sabelli came down in Ireland with a broken fuel line. They 'walked into Lahinch almost unobserved and, going to the Commercial Hotel there, booked rooms and went off to bed'. They eventually reached Rome and embarked on a reverse crossing, but crashed the aircraft into the Mynydd Carningli mountain, Wales, on 19 August. Pond and Sabelli were unhurt. A very rare airworthy Bellanca CH300 recently restored by Big Sky Stearman in nearby Sandy, OR. Owner Warren Wright, founder of North-Wright Airways, has moved the aircraft to Norman Wells, NWT where the airline is based. It now carries the period appropriate registration CF-ATN and flies on floats.

The Bellanca CH-200 Pacemaker was a six-seat, high-wing, single-engine utility aircraft built in the United States in the 1920s. It was a development of the Wright WB-2 that Bellanca had acquired the rights to in 1926 and was the first Bellanca-branded aircraft to gain a type certificate. The CH-200 was used in a number of pioneering long-distance flights and attempts on distance and endurance records. Bellanca further developed the earlier CH-200 to create the CH-300 Pacemaker. The CH-300 was a conventional, high-wing braced monoplane with fixed tailwheel undercarriage. Like other Bellanca

Pacific International Airways (PIA) was a small pioneering charter operator, operating out of Anchorage in the early 1930s. The airline was acquired by Pacific Alaska Airways on 15 October 1932.
