The first prototype of the XCG-20 troop glider, rebuilt as the XC-123 with two R-2800 piston engines. It first flew as such probably on 14 October 1949, although Joe Baugher's site only says that it was damaged while landing on that date. It crashed on 27 June 1951. The C-123 Provider was eventually produced by Fairchild. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

The second prototype of the Chase XG-20 assault glider was rebuilt as the XC-123A, America's first jet transport aircraft, first flown on 21 April 1951. The four J47 turbojets burnt too much fuel, but the XC-123 with two piston engines was ordered into production. C-123 production was eventually taken over by Fairchild. Photo probably taken at Trenton - Mercer, New Jersey. Photo by: Hank Walker / Life
