Sea trials for Flying Bananas. Data for the first one. XM-8 is 111832, whereas XM-9 and XM-6 are HRP-1s - note the different nose shapes. Photo dated May 1951 by Life but we gather that this took place off Key West in 1952. Photo by: Hank Walker / Life

Stan Hiller in an early HJ-1 helicopter, as proposed for the civilian 'commuter' market. N8170H is said to be the machine preserved at the Hiller Aviation Museum. Two other prototypes hover overhead. Further development led to the military YH-32 and HOE-1. Photo probably taken in 1952.

Coming out of maintenance here in Los Angeles, this early Convairliner crashed on take-off from Palm Springs on a Las Vegas - Palm Springs - San Diego service on 13 February 1958. The right wing leading edge came off. The aircraft landed in the desert at high speed and hit some boulders. It caught fire and some of the 18 passengers were seriously injured. Second DC-3 in Chile, from 1946, ex 45-990. Not a paramilitary aircraft - the circular LAN logo was never the air force roundel. Photographed by the globetrotting Sophie Petersen probably in 1952 at 'Balmacedas'. Balmaceda was a stop on the Santiago - Punta Arenas route. We understand that the airfield was once called Leonor, but it is assumed to be the same location as modern SCBA. CC-CLL to CC-CLDH in 1957 and to CC-CBN in 1963. Withdrawn in 1976. Note that this is not construction number 26794/15349, which was CC-CLL in the 1990s. Photo by: Sophie Petersen / National Museum of Denmark

Photographed in flight over Hajdúszoboszló in eastern Hungary. The star roundel on the tail is possibly associated with the Magyar Honvéd Sportszövetség, the Hungarian Defence Sports Association. The Yak UT trainer first flew in 1937 as the Ya-20 according to Bill Gunston. 7243 examples were built. Some were supplied to Poland and Hungary after WWII. Photo from: Fortepan

The Zlin Z-381, the Czechoslovak-built Bücker Bestmann, went by the name Fecske (Swallow) in Hungarian miilitary and paramilitary service. Avia-info.hu suggests that six airframes, HA-BUA through HA-BUF, were delivered directly to Magyar Honvéd Sportszövetség, the Hungarian Defence Sports Association, in 1949. Others were later transferred from the Hungarian air force, such as HA-BUL / 208 (c/n 251, ex I-201) and HA-BUM / 209 (c/n 252, ex I-202). This formation was pictured over Hajdúszoboszló in eastern Hungary. Photo from: Fortepan

The H-13D gave the Bell 47 its familiar look with the fishbowl canopy and was produced in the new Forth Worth plant which started manufacturing HSL helicopters on 2 January 1952. 51-2450 was one of the first H-13Ds off the line. A close contemporary, 51-2454, was already active with X Army Corps in Korea on 15 July 1952 when it was shot down. The photo was still issued by the Bell Aircraft Corporation, PO Box One in Buffalo, New York. Photo from: Bell

VH-MMB was delivered to MMA in 1947 ex RAAF and flew with the airline until its CoA expired in March 1959. By then it was operating scheduled services from Perth to Rottnest Island a short distance off the coast and for charter and aerial survey work. Despite being assessed to be in good condition, it soon had its wings sawn off. It was removed from the register in March 1960. Photo from: Library and Archives NT

NZ2423 went into storage very soon after arriving in NZ. It was placed in a rubberised cocoon and moved to Ardmore aerodrome by barge and truck. In 1952 it was reactivated and flown to Hamilton for a further period of storage. In 1954 it was finally delivered to No.2 Wellington squadron and would end up making the last RNZAF P-51 flight in 1957. NZ2423 is in civilian hands and being restored. Photo here shows it at the old Mangere airport (now part of Auckland International) around the time it was flown from Ardmore to Hamilton. Photo from: Des White/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

On April 19, 1954, NZ5901 crashed landed at Mauripur, Pakistan. The accident left the aircraft badly damaged, its back broken, undercarriage collapsed and engines hanging from the wings. Parts of the aircraft were shipped to Bristol in the UK for rebuilding. Sources say only the tail and engines reused and the rest of the airframe scrapped. NZ5901 was lost during a supply drop in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia on December 10, 1956 when it struck a ridge. Photo from: Des White/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

This Auster is former G-AKOX and RT637. It was registered as PH-NEP by NV Vliegbedrijf Meteor in Amsterdam on 18 April 1952 and used for cropspraying over the Houtrakpolder. The company already went broke in October of that year and 'NEP' was sold to Germany in January 1955. It was destined to become (together with Auster HB-EOC) the source for a new Auster, D-ELUT. The project was however broken up in 1972 (source H.Dekker) photo by Cees de Boer in Beeldbank Noord Hollands Archief NL-HlmNHA_6044
