I recall being in a school biology lesson when this noisily arrived in the Southend circuit on 13.6.67 - we all ran to the windows and forgot about reproduction or whatever. A total of 661 "Flygande Tunnan" ("Flying Barrels") were built from 1950 to 1956, the largest production run for any SAAB aircraft. An English test pilot described it as "on the ground an ugly duckling - in the air, a swift". Eventually displayed in the HAM which closed in 1982, 29640 landed up in the MAM at Coventry

This was the 133rd F-106 produced by Convair at San Diego in 1959 and flew with five different Fighter Interceptor Squadrons before reaching the 194th FIS at Fresno in 1974. Ten years later it went in storage at DM AFB but emerged in 1991 for conversion to a QF-106 drone, becoming Tyndall-based. It returned to DM in 1998 but was selected for preservation in the Aerospace Museum at Hill AFB, UT, where it has undergone a superb restoration for display in the marks of its first unit, the 456th FIS (Castle)

This Texas ANG Stratofreighter was one of over 800 built and was accompanied on this occasion by five others on one of the last 'Creek Party' deployments. Entered the boneyard at DM in May 1977 after also serving the Pennsylvania ANG and was scrapped at Dross Metals after 1986. The commonality of the wing and engines to the preceding Superfortress design is evident here

To complement my upload of this DC-8 as PH-DCI with KLM, her owner from delivery in 1961, here she is with Viasa resting under the blue sky at her home base. Acquired by Venezuela's national airline in 1975, she survived another five years after this shot (I think taken from the boarding bus) on my first visit to Caracas, where I later enjoyed a great ramp tour

This photo goes a long way to explaining the appeal of the old Kemayoran airport - it had it all for the propliner enthusiast, here with a little added glamour too. This Viscount spent nearly all of its life on the other side of the world, first with Ansett in 3.59 then FEAT from 4.70. Mandala bought her in 5.76 and she was eventually scrapped at CGK in the early 2000's
