Converted from a PBY-4, this was the prototype of the amphibious PBY-5A. First flown as such at San Diego on 2 November 1939, it is seen here at 'Washington', presumably Anacostia, arriving from Florida. Despite having wheels, it apparently took the traditional route via Panama. Photo from: Library of Congress

Most probably Tempelhof in 1936. ALIX was the second He 111 to fly, before the V2, D-ALES. It was originally designated as a He 111c (lower case). In March 1937 this aircraft crashed in Bathurst, Gambia, arriving with mail for South America which was to be transferred to a Dornier Wal. The Ju 52 D-ASIH crashed in the French Alps on 3 December 1936. Behind that is Hitler's personal Ju 52, D-2600. Until April 1936 this was c/n 4021. It was replaced by c/n 4053, also D-2600. A special mission for Franeker. Thai Prince Paribatra was exiled to the Netherlands East Indies following a coup in Thailand in 1932. He died in 1944 in Bandung, then under Japanese occupation. His remains were flown back to Thailand by the KLM plane. Franeker crashed in India on 12 July 1949. Among the 45 dead were 15 American journalists who had just made a trip through the Indonesian islands, paid for by the Dutch government to convince them of the justness of Dutch colonial policy. Originally designed by Bristol and first flown in March 1940, the Albemarle bomber featured nosewheel landing gear but was built of welded steel tubes and wood to conserve light alloys, and was adaped to serve as a transport and glider tug. 600 examples were manufactured by the AW Hawksley factory in Brockworth, set up by AW and Hawker Siddeley. The Curtiss O-52 Owl was the last of the US Army's O series observation aircraft, ordered into production only in 1940. It was found to be unsuitable for combat, and this aircraft was used as a subject in a military photography course at Yale University. Photo by: Andreas Feininger / Life

The photographer flew on this 1940 aircraft and some of the pictures in his series were taken at Vero Beach, Florida. Shortly hereafter on 30 July, N19963 collided with an F6F Hellcat, BuNo 72887, over Chesterfield, New Jersey, and crashed. All 15 occupants lost their lives, and the 'reckless' pilot of the Hellcat was also killed. Photo from: Ralph Morse / Life

This was the prototype of the L-649, the first true airliner model of the Connie, first flown as NX101A on 18 October 1946. It entered service with Eastern Air Lines as NC101A in October 1947 - not the first example to be delivered. Eastern was the only airline to operate the L-649 as it was quickly superseded by the L-749. Photo by: Ralph Morse / Life

The early Constellations were often volume-restricted rather than weight-restricted. The Speedpak cargo pannier was developed at the request of Eastern Air Lines. It reduced speed by 10 mph and range by 4%. It was electrically lowered for unloading or for removal as it was typically used on shorter flights - note that the unit wears an individual number, 14, and does not belong to the airframe. Eastern actually ordered 14 Speedpaks initially and KLM seven. Photo by: Ralph Morse / Life
