The star treasure of the National Air Force Museum of Canada is their wonderful Halifax restoration, the only completely genuine remaining example in the world. It was recovered from Lake Mjøsa in Norway in 1995 having been shot down on 24th April 1945 while on a flight to resupply Norwegian resistance fighters.

Scanned from a 80x55mm print. No date given, but thought to be 1944. Writen on the back of the print is 'S/Ldr Frazer and crew went missing in this aircraft'. Info from the CWGC shows that Squadron Leader Ronald George Renwick Frazer (age 30) of 58 Sqn. went missing on February 24th, 1945, No known grave. This Halifax was based at RAF Tarrant Ruston during WWII for special ops missions. It took off on 24th April 1945 on a flight to resupply Norwegian resistance fighters. This drop was made successfully but she was hit by AA fire and forced to ditch into Lake Mjøsa. All crew members survived but their dingy did not inflate and they were forced to swim in the icy water to shore but, tragically, only the tail gunner made it to safety.

When restoration of this Halifax Mk.III composite was completed in 1984, it was the only complete example in the world, although a second has since been recovered from a Norwegian lake and restored for display in Canada. Based around large fuselage sections of Halifax Mk.II HR792, parts from LW687 and JP158 were also used, along with the wings from Hastings TG536. Painted on the port side as Mk.III LV907 of 158 Sqdn, the starboard side represents Mk.IV NP763 'H7-N' with French roundels, commemorating an aircraft of that country's 346 (Guyenne) Sqdn, which was based at Elvington.
