Two old classics, both V-Jets! VRT's Vulcan waits silently for its next engine run while the magnificent 707 VH-XBA returns from one of its test flights, two days before finally heading down under (ok, this is the original 1959 c/s, it wasn't until the next scheme in 1961 that she really became a V-Jet). Oh yes, and the experimental predecessor of the Vulcan was the Avro 707...

The first Victor production aircraft flew on 1.2.56 - at this time, the only UK-based aircraft with sufficient performance to intercept it at height were the F-101 Voodoos of the USAF's 81st TFW. This early example was delivered to the RAF on 29.11.57 and is seen here hoping for preservation in its original white colours (but note camo outboard wing panels). It was, however, sold as scrap just seven months later

A unique Hunter which served as one of the RNAF's 20 T.7s (the only one in camouflage) between 1959 and 1965 when it joined the NLR for experimental work. Last flight 22nd January 1980; unfortunately plans to keep it in flyable condition failed and it was scrapped. The cockpit was saved along with the wings, the latter now in a composite airframe at Long Marston made up from about six different aircraft but based upon XJ714

The Friendship looked superb in Sempati's livery - this one was a 1969-build aircraft that first served Danish Aero Lease, being sold to the Indonesian airline in 1.76 after a lease to Aviaco. Damaged in a landing incident in 1.93 but repaired and continued to fly until wfu at Halim in 10.97, then b/u there in 10.01

A venture onto the terminal roof service area gave this view of the famous Alliance SP which served SAA's Uganda/Tanzania/Rwanda joint op 1995-99, just in from LHR. After return to SAA, this 1976 machine was scrapped at JNB in 10.02. Behind, an Inversija IL-76 is being pushed back using its special tow-bar, with Lake Victoria visible beyond. On final over the lake, we had a major bird-strike which took out engine no.3, so I had to wait all day for another SP to ferry up from JNB before going on to DAR

The Savage was a 1950s carrier bomber, later converted for refuelling/recon. The AJ-2 version had two P&W R-2800s and a J33 turbojet in the tail, good for over 40,000ft if piston engine stalling around 35k could be overcome. After service with the USN 1954-59 as 130418 and as firebomber N101Z, this one was used by AVCO Lycoming for jet testing in 1971/72. The only survivor of 143 built, flown to USN museum at Pensacola on 9.5.84 and restored to USN marks. When I recently sent the pic round my friends, no-one could name it!
