"THe Swords" was an aerobatic team fielded by 3 FTS just for 1974, disbanded at the end of the season as an economy measure by the MoD. Four aircraft were flown but a fifth spare appears here. Right to left: XW315 (caught fire in air 1984 and not repaired), XW424 (crashed 1977), XW407 (crashed 19860, XW370 (to Cosford as GIA) and XW428 (to USA as N4311M)

The first YUH-61 was rolled out of the Boeing Vertol factory in Ridley Park, just west of PHL, on 9 September 1974 and the caption from Veriflite suggests the photo was taken there. The first flight was made from the Grumman factory airfield at Calverton, NY. The UH-61 lost the UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System) competition to the Sikorsky UH-60. The Dauphin was developed during the early 1970s as a 6-10 seat Aloutette III replacement. First flown in June 1972, it was the first helicopter to incorporate a anti-torque fenestron tail rotor encased within the tail unit. The twin-engined SA 365C2 soon followed and accounted for the great majority of over one thousand Dauphins built. Over 200 examples of the SA365M have also been manufactured under licence by Harbin in China as the Z-9

By virtue of its RR Viper engine, Aermacchi first displayed their MB.326 at Farnborough as far back as 1966 and it became a regular attendee through till 1978 when the MB.339 started to supersede it. I-AMKK was also at the 1970 and 1972 shows and reappeared in 1976 having been re-registered I-IVAO. It now resides atop a pole at Zagarolo in Italy, coded RS-33

Delivered to the RAF in July 1962, XP395 operated with 110 Sqdn in Borneo during the early 1960s in camouflage. Moving to 230 Sqdn, it was deployed from Odiham to Nicosia for the UN forces in Cyprus in the late 1960s. By 1974 it was in yellow SAR colours with 22 Sqdn 'A' Flt at Chivenor. On withdrawal in 1981, it was sent to 1 SoTT at Halton taking up 8674M. In 1997 it was bought by the BBC for use in the TV series '999 Life Savers' and was submerged in a quarry at Plympton, Devon marked as XJ729 (possibly boom from that flyable aircraft). Wreck said to have been at North Luffenham by 2019

At the time assigned to 22 Sqn, this Whirlwind previously flew SAR duties with 202 Sqn. Its service career began in March 1962 but ended on 3rd June 1982 when it suffered a tail rotor failure and was written off at Koksijde AB. It was en route from Chivenor via Manston to RAF Gutersloh and this was to be its final flight anyway, intended as a ground instructional frame. It was later moved by road to Gutersloh being allocated 8688M upon arrival. Finally scrapped in May 1985 when the base was transferred from the RAF to the Army.

This Spitfire was taken on charge shortly after the end of WW2 in Europe and operated with 595 Sqdn, 695 Sqdn, 1 CAACU and 2 CAACU till January 1957 when an accident at RAF Little Snoring grounded it. After use as a gate guard at RAF Horsham St Faith (nowadays Norwich Airport) and a period at Duxford it took on similar duties at RAF Coltishall from 1966, remaining there till the end of 1988, after which it was sent to St Athan. Sold in the US, it was registered N2289J in 1994 and later moved to Canada and Germany. In 2019 it was said to be destined to return to the UK.
