Looking like a Piper Apache 235, this is in fact a very early (1960) Piper Aztec. The ugly stumpy nose was extended to more graceful proportions for the 1961 Aztec B and subsequent, but reintroduced for the Apache 235 which first appeared in 1962. Very confusing!

The first Victor production aircraft flew on 1.2.56 - at this time, the only UK-based aircraft with sufficient performance to intercept it at height were the F-101 Voodoos of the USAF's 81st TFW. This early example was delivered to the RAF on 29.11.57 and is seen here hoping for preservation in its original white colours (but note camo outboard wing panels). It was, however, sold as scrap just seven months later
