One of the original five Ryan ST (no suffix) aircraft, powered by a 95-hp Menasco engine. NC18315 is a 1937 Taylorcraft A. Foster Lane's operation was temporarily 'evicted' from the south hangar at CMH by the US Navy during WWII. Seen here are the middle hangar, then used by Curtiss Flying Service, and the now demolished north hangar. N14911 is still current as of 2024 as an ST-A. It has been painted in Dutch East Indies warbird colours. Photo from: Lane Aviation

The first DC-2, registered in 1934. Foster Lane established the Port Columbus Flying School in 1935 and based himself in the TWA hangar. The front of the hangar originally carried the logo of TWA predecessor TAT, which was restored circa 2016, but what does it say here? NC13711 sold to Royal Air Force in 1941 as DG477 but by then it wore TWA scheme with two red tail stripes. Photo from: SFO Museum

Records show A6631 served less than six months and is unlikely to have left France but the photo is not at a typical operational aerodrome. Maybe the factory. . On May 1, 1917 A6631 struck an obstacle on takeoff. The pilot was able to complete the mission in the damaged aircraft but it appears to have been written off on return. The obsolete Morane-Saulnier P was withdrawn from RFC use in 1917. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand

NC18945 is ready for boarding at gate 2. N18945 to Continental Air Lines in the 1950s. On 29 August 1955 it collided with a Piper Tri-Pacer, N3334B, while landing in Hobbs, New Mexico. The DC-3 landed safely and was repaired. Noted in Continental service at Dallas in 1962, when they still flew to some 'rural' destinations. Subsequent history of N18945 unclear but Continental subsidiary CASI operated DC-3s in SE Asia. Reg cancelled in 2013. Photo from: SFO Museum

Aircraft wears Eastern Air Lines livery but did not fly for EAL and was really owned by the Major League baseball team. The Dodgers used a DC-3 earlier. In 1959 the team shocked New York by becoming the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ties with Eastern Air Lines were not immediately broken, judging by Peter Gates' 1959 picture of N1R. Frenchman Louis Paulhan was a star aviator and was paid $25,000 to appear with two Farman III and two Blériot XI planes and two other pilots. The abortive East German jetliner often called the Baade 152 had its origins in Junkers jet bomber projects and the 150 bomber, designed by German engineers detained in the USSR. Development took place at Flugzeugwerke Dresden - note that the company name is not VEB, which only meant People-Owned Enterprise. The first flight was on 4 December 1958 but DM-ZYA crashed on 4 March 1959 on only its second flight. The second prototype DM-ZYB flew just once in 1960. Note that the East German flag was identical to the West German flag until 1959. Photo from: SLUB / Deutsche Fotothek

LM233 seen here with 32 mission marks. There is a later photo of it with 60 missions completed. LM233 was damaged at Waddington on March 5, 1945 and unlikely to have been repaired this late in the war. Was based at Bottesford prior to Waddington. 467 Squadron was an Australian one, hence the kangaroo. LM233 was scrapped in 1947. Photo from: State Library of Queensland
