Lancaster NF920 "Easy Elsie" was one of 37 Lancasters that took off from Lossiemouth to bomb German battleship "Tirpitz" in Northern Norway on 29 October 1944. During the unsuccesful strike, "Easy Elsie" was hit by German anti-aircraft fire and its crew directed it to Sweden, where it made a succesful landing in a soggy bog near the small town of Porjus. The Lancaster was damaged and set on fire by the crew, all of which survived the ordeal. The fire quickly went out and so the almost complete wreckage can still be found in exactly the same spot where it landed 80 years ago.

Brought to Australia straight off the production line to help sell War Bonds. Later used to train Qantas pilots to fly Lancastrians. The RAAF had two Lancasters in Australia when the war ended. A66-1 was scrapped and A66-2 (W4783), a 90-mission veteran known around the country as G for George, was preserved at the Australian War Memorial. Photo from: National Archives of Australia

LM233 seen here with 32 mission marks. There is a later photo of it with 60 missions completed. LM233 was damaged at Waddington on March 5, 1945 and unlikely to have been repaired this late in the war. Was based at Bottesford prior to Waddington. 467 Squadron was an Australian one, hence the kangaroo. LM233 was scrapped in 1947. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Used for war bonds tours of Australia and New Zealand. Famous for being flown under the Sydney Harbour Bridge on October 22, 1943. Ran off runway on landing at Evans Head on October 26, 1943 sustaining severe damage, but was repaired. Later used to train Qantas Lancastrian pilots. Scrapped in 1948 after the RAAF decided to preserve its other Lancaster, W4783 (A66-2), because unlike Queenie, it was a combat veteran. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
