'Captain Hawks leaving Vancouver airport for Los Angeles.' The fourth of the five Travel Air R racing aircraft had longer-span wings and Frank Hawks, who clearly was not superstitious, used Texaco No 13 to set some 200 'speed records' between various cities. Text on the fuselage reads:'This plane has traveled 100,000 miles at an average speed of 192 mph on inter-city flights in the U.S., Canada and Europe.' Hawks crashed it on 16 April 1932, but it was repaired and is preserved in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Photo by: Stuart Thomson / City of Vancouver Archives

Barkley-Grow Aircraft of Detroit first flew the T8P (Transport, 8 Passenger) in April 1937. It had a very unorthodox wing construction and fixed landing gear. Skis or floats could easily be fitted, the floats coming with an additional central tailfin. Only eleven T8P-1s were built. Yukon King was one of three taken by Yukon Southern. Flying over East Java during the Dutch attempts to regain control. Following the Japanese conquest of the Netherlands East Indies, surviving and newly delivered Dutch Catalinas equipped No 321 (Dutch) Sqn, RAF, in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). This amphibious PBY-5A, original serial Y-75, entered service on 9 September 1942, but hit a rock on arrival at RAF China Bay and sank. It was salvaged and repaired as a transport aircraft. It served until 1952 when it was broken up at Biak, Netherlands New Guinea. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

This photo was taken early in A11-2's service when it still had the RAF serial on the fin. The open, calm waters makes Point Cook, the aircraft's base, the likely location but it is not stated. In Brisbane the Southamptons used the Brisbane River, which is less than 300m wide. A11-2 continued flying with the RAAF, on and off, until 1939 when is disappears from the records. Presumed burnt. Flown by test pilot Flying Officer Arthur Clouston and his co-pilot, newspaper correspondent Victor Ricketts in an 11-day, 42,000km UK-New Zealand-UK flight in March 1938. It is not known if the photo was taken eastbound or westbound but the same three Australian airports - Darwin, Charleville and Sydney - were used both ways. The NZ destination was Blenheim with the crew overnighting there before setting off again. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

The Dewoitine D.332 prototype at Schiphol on a proving flight. Émeraude departed for Saigon the next month but crashed on the final leg of the return flight, near Corbigny in France in a snowstorm on 15 January 1934. The main variant of the D.332 series was the D.338 which had a rectrable landing gear and was three metres longer still! The terminal building has been reconstucted at the Aviodrome in Lelystad. The US Navy's AJ Savage was a carrier-capable nuclear bomber. It was powered by two R-2800 radials plus an auxiliary jet engine with a retractable dorsal intake. NASA used three Savages for weightlessness (zero gravity) simulation, including this one, Navy serial 134069. Photo from: NASA
