VH-UNB, with renowned Qantas pilot Lester Brain at the controls, forced landed at Farnborough, near Yeppoon due to engine trouble. The location appears to be be along Farnborough Road near Farnborough Beach but the area has been altered by major road works and 90 years of cyclones. The houses are Queenslanders, a popular style designed for tropical living. -UNB crashed and burned at Ayr on April 10, 1930. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Ex ZK-ABW. VH-UPB was used by Matthews Aviation between Melbourne and Launceston via King Island, where it made a water landing. It would be wrecked at King Island when dashed against the rocks on May 13, 1936. It is not known if the photo was taken at King Island, Tasmania, or at Victorian Bay. Wartime photo of the airstrip at Mareeba in North Queensland. Built in 1942 as a base for B-17s. This photo likely taken in 1943 when P-38s from the 8th FG, 80th FS were stationed there. The CW-22 in the foreground is probably one of the Dutch aircraft diverted to Australia after the fall of the Dutch East Indies. Wartime Mareeba had two runways and an extensive network of taxiways. One (sealed) runway remains in use today. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

The plane the centre of a 1920s scandal. Flown by Capt Lancaster from the UK to Australia, the adventurous pilot was accompanied by Mrs Miller, a married woman. The Avian was added to the Australian register as G-AUTU and later VH-UTU. Lancaster and Miller moved to the US where he was charged with the murder of another Mrs Miller's lovers. Acquitted, Lancaster returned to the UK and record flight attempts, dying of thirst in 1933 when he force-landed in the Sahara. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Registered in 1928 to Arthur Butler who went on start Butler Airways at Cootamunda. Became VH-UHY in 1932. Reported in 1940 as dismantled and stored at Toowoomba, Queensland. UHY changed hands a few times after that but under wartime restrictions is unlikely to have been flown. Struck off the register in 1946. The location is either New South Wales, where the aircraft was based in 1929, or Victoria. The scenery is typical of rural parts of both states. Photo from: State Library of Victoria

G-AUBZ had a remarkably long career for an aircraft of its era. Registered in 1921, it was around long enough to became VH-UBZ. It was initially owned by legendary pilot Ray Parer, then went to Qantas and on to Matthews Aviation at Essendon. It remained in use into the late 1930s before being struck off the register in 1940, Photo from: National Library of Australia
