KLM's London to Melbourne Air Race adventure might very well have ended in disaster when Uiver got caught in a thunderstorm at night. Thanks to the townsfolk of Albury, the DC-2 was able to land safely, and here Captain Parmentier is seen taking off from the racecourse, leaving the rest of the crew and the payload behind. This was probably against the race rules but no one seems to have protested. Photo from: State Library Victoria

This is the prototype of the M.3 Falcon, developed from the M.2 Hawk. Just a week after its first flight, it started in the great London to Melbourne Air Race but despite this, there are few photos of this aircraft. Pilot Harold Brook took a month to arrive in Melbourne and did complain about the lack of attention he got. His return flight to England in 1935 was very much faster. The Fairey Fox competed with the Hawker Hart family and equipped only one RAF squadron, No 12, from 1926 until 1931. Two surplus Foxes took part in the London to Melbourne Air Race and this one, formerly J7950, was flown by Roy Parer, a veteran of the 1919 England to Australia contest. By the time the winning DH.88 Comet finished, Parer and his navigator were only in Paris, but they eventually arrived in Melbourne on 13 February 1935. The aircraft was sold as VH-UTR. With Daniel Jensen (left), Michael Hansen (right) flew his Desoutter to eighth place in the London to Melbourne Air Race. Later converted to ambulance in Denmark for donation to Finland following the outbreak of the Winter War. Not delivered until the autumn of 1941, the aircraft served in the Finnish air force as DS-1 until an accident in November 1944. Restored as OH-TJA in 1947, it crashed near Tampere within a few weeks on 4 December 1947.
