Making an extremely rare appearance at LHR, this 737 was delivered to Indian Airlines as VT-EHX in Aug 1983 but was taken over by the Air Force just 6 months later

Two classic transports for the price of one. The Beverley first flew 15.7.57 and became 7988M as an instructional frame after its 84 Sqdn service; b/u 3.77 although the cockpit section survives at Doncaster. Argosy XN819 started with A&AEE in 11.61, to 105 then 114/267 Sqdns; 8205M as ground trainer at Finningley but burnt out on fire dump by 9.86

Mexicana's XA-NAT was stored at MEX from Dec 1970 and became N777WA in May 1973, but this was never painted on the aircraft. Bought by Redmond Air in Nov 1979 (along with N888WA now preserved at Everett, and N999WA, scrapped at Chicago) with the intention of forming a club to fly gamblers to Las Vegas. This one remained derelict at the airport right through the 1980s (note the Dan-Air wing tank). It was moved to Irapuato Zoo where it clung onto life in an increasingly poor state until scrapped in March 2015. Sad to think of such a rare and iconic aircraft succumbing to the breakers so recently, some 55 years after first entering service.

Delivered to the RAF in 1948 and saw service with 207 Sqdn at Northolt and 21 Sqdn at Andover; posted to RNAS Culdrose 1978-81. To East Surrey College, Redhill then Goodwood during 2001. To Redhill Aerodrome and restored by East Sussex Avn Group - during total strip, many of its former schemes and badges were revealed, which spanned back some 55 years. Registration G-KOOL was officially cancelled Jan 2012, but it had last flown as such in the early 1980s. Moved to the Yorkshire Air Museum later in 2012.

Stored at Stansted since the demise of Lloyd in June 1972, this Brit went on to enjoy a new lease of life with Aer Turas as EI-BAA after brief periods with Monarch and IAS. Scrapped Dublin 1981

A trip in an Auster afforded this unusual view. First reg to Canadair 4.63 as CL-44D-8 CF-PBG-X, to Loftleidir TF-LLF and converted to the stretched CL-44J 1966. To Cargolux 4 months before this shot and then sold as N4993U in 1976, later becoming TL-AAL, 5A-CVB, 5A-DGJ, 9Q-CQS and lastly EI-BRP with Aer Turas 1.86. Bought by Heavylift 5.89, wfu SEN 11.90 and b/u 8.92

Despite the attractive colours, this airline lasted only for seven months starting in March 2006. The aircraft was first with PSA as N352PS from March 1985 and joined Titan in 1997 as G-ZAPL after being leased to Debonair. Became EI-PAT with CityJet in AF colours, then TN-AIC, D6-BJH and stored as ZS-SFZ in 2010

This smart-looking 100 Srs Friendship was first registered VH-EWK in Feb 1967 and went to Busy Bee in April 1984. To Air Nordic/Swe Aviation as SE-KZH July 1993 and then Sobel Air in Ghana as 9G-BEL. Stored at Accra 2004

There were many special schemes amongst the frustrated visitors to that year's RIAT, cancelled because of waterlogging after torrential rainfall, but the arctic tiger job on this 28F N.262 was one of the most eye-catching

Displaying its original 77th TFS tailcode of 'JT' before the 20th TFW adopted 'UH' for all three squadrons ('JR' and 'JS' were the other two former codes used), this swinger has just landed after its show. Crashed in Turkey, 1990

The third Herald built (in 1959), soon after arrival with BAF from Trans Brasil. There were only six Srs 100's made and fortunately this historically significant machine survives, appropriately preserved at Woodley where it was built

The well-known NAF Mildenhall Super Dak at the annual Open House. On 21.11.73 the aircraft encountered severe icing over Iceland during a local supply flight, making it impossible to maintain height, so the crew elected to make a forced landing on a frozen river. The ice broke but 171 stayed afloat. After recovery the remains were abandoned and are still there topped by ice and snow

This early Phantom (original designation F4H-1F) set a low-altitude speed record, still unbeaten, on 28.8.61, when Lts Huntington Hardisty (pilot) and Earl De Esch (RIO) flew her at 903 mph over a 3 km low-altitude course at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The maximum altitude reached was only 125 ft, fully living up to the project name - Sageburner. 145307 is seen here at the NASM's storage facility with B-29 'Enola Gay'
