On 21 September Dakota 6843 of the SAAF's 86 Multi-Engine Flying School suffered an in-flight fire in the vicinity of Bloemfontein in the then Orange Free State. The crew landed next to the N1 highway south of the city. This photo was taken later that month along the N1 south of Bloemfontein when the airframe was salvaged. It was later written off. Originally USAF 44-77061, then RAF KN683. Sold to Swissair in 1947 for CHF 283.000 as HB-IRN. Flew with Swissair until 1964, then went to Swissair Aviation School until 1969. It was then given to the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne, Switzerland, after beeing restored by the Swissair Fokker Team. there is also a Swissair DC-3 HB-IRN at Munich, Germany that is cn 4828 with false markings.

Originally USAF 44-77061, then RAF KN683. Sold to Swissair in 1947 for CHF 283.000 as HB-IRN. Flew with Swissair until 1964, then went to Swissair Aviation School until 1969. It was then given to the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne, Switzerland, after beeing restored by the Swissair Fokker Team. there is also a Swissair DC-3 HB-IRN at Munich, Germany that is cn 4828 with false markings.
