The RCAF acquired several war-weary B-17s for use as trans-Atlantic mail planes. Despite being described as dilapidated when delivered and suffering several accidents including a midair collision between Prestwick and Gibraltar, 9205 continued in service until December 1946. It was sold in Argentina as LV-RTP and finally scrapped in 1964. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

This heavy bomber of No 214 Sqn, based at Saint-Inglevert, was damaged by German fire and landed on the beach 'between Valkenisse and the Koudekerke beacon' in the early hours of 1 July 1918. It was the largest aircraft to be interned by the Dutch during WWI and given serial HP-703, but was not repaired and thus not flown. It was returned to the RAF in March 1920. The RAF acquired 428 Hudson IIIs including T9386, which was the first. Three were passed to the RCAF but this is not one of those three. T9386 appears in the logbook of a Ferry Command pilot flying Montreal-Toronto-Montreal in July 1943 so it may have been attached to that command as a hack and/or for type conversions. NZ4111 struck rocks taking off from the lagoon on November 4, 1959. The pilot quickly taxied into shallow water. Next day a team arrived in another Sunderland to assess damage and this photo is believed to be that day. In 1960 NZ4111 was stripped of its engines before being hauled up on the shore with its tail hacked off. The RNZAF museum sent a team in 1993 to recover more of the aircraft. They took away the floats and turret but fuselage and wings had been incorporated into sheds. Parts of the fuselage have since been reassembled. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
