Sherman Fairchild developed an interest in aerial photographic survey during World War I. He started Fairchild Aircraft to build an aircraft (the FC-2) to meet the needs of his survey business. Normally NC2K, NR2K was used by Fairchild's photogrammetry (low level, oblique images) business at Burbank. It became NR2K when it participated in air races. NC2K managed to appear in a couple of movies because of its proximity to Hollywood. The aircraft is still registered and is still based in California. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

This was the first all-metal Canadian built bush plane. This prototype parasol wing version was powered by a 525 HP P&W S1D1 Wasp engine. It sank after running into a submerged log near Lost Bay on Confederation Lake 3 October 1940. Subsequently salvaged and donated to the museum for restoration. The museum was renamed the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada 19 December 2014 and closed its doors 22 October 2018. The historic TCA hangar and original terminal building were sadly demolished to make way for a new maintenance facility. The construction of a new museum building commenced 1 May 2020.

One of a kind, this was the first all-metal Canadian designed bush plane. With a parasol wing and rear mounted cockpit, it could carry a tonne of freight or 8 persons. It crashed in Northern Ontario in 1940. The engine and 75 pounds of gold were salvaged. Recovered many years later and restored and is now on display at the Western Canadian Air Museum in Winnipeg.
