Original colour photo of Blenheim IF fighters of No 27 Sqn which was sent to Singapore early in 1941. Note the gun pack under the fuselage and day fighter colours - most likely these aircraft were not equipped with radar. Photo by: Carl Mydans / Life

According to the Air Force Museum of New Zealand this is one of the nine Hurricanes supplied to 488 Squadron by 232 Squadron RAF in the dying days of the defence of Singapore. In little more than a week after receiving the first aircraft on January 24, 1942, 488 Sqn had withdrawn to the Dutch East Indies. BM899 remained behind, struck off charge by the RAF as lost in Singapore. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

The 2nd squadron of the NEI army's Aircraft Group V was sent to Singapore in December 1941. The Brewster fighter wears the squadron's smart Javan rhinoceros badge in front of the cockpit. The pilot is thought to be the commanding officer, Capt Jacob Pieter van Helsdingen, rather than Lt Guus Deibel. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie
