Bell Aircraft began studying the tilt rotor concept in the 1940s. The XV-3 was the first hardware to come out of the design work and led to the V-22 Osprey (via the Bell XV-15 tilt rotor). Two XV-3s were built between 1952 -55, with the first (54-147) crashing in 1956 during testing. The cause was in-flight instability and the remaining aircraft continued extensive flight and wind tunnel testing. This aircraft was retired in 1966 after being damaged during the last wind tunnel test. It was transferred to the National Museum of the US Air Force in 2007 after a two year restoration by Bell.

A surprisingly small number of airlines flew this Convair over 40 years. It was first delivered to American Airlines as a Convair 240 in August 1948. Sold to Trans Texas Airways in July 1964, the airliner was converted to a Convair 600 in 1967 before the airline name changed to Texas International Airlines. Bar Harbor bought the aircraft in March 1979 and flew it until 1989 when is became a Continental Express commuter. Registered to International Turbine Service in May 1989, it was broken up for parts and the registration cancelled by 1992.

Delivered to the US Army as 58-1694, this Otter went to Vietnam in 1963. Placed in storage at Vung Tau for disposal in 1971, it was among 5 Otters donated to Nicaragua. Damaged landing in the jungle in 1976, it was recovered in 1979 and with another wrecked Otter, shipped to Miami as scrap. They were trucked to Duncan, BC where parts were used to rebuild Otter 288.
