The DC-3 was built in 1938. In that same year, Bachmann, Blumenthal & Co Flugzeugbau (BBF) began manufacture of aircraft parts at this airfield, taking over a Gotha plant. Nuremberg's commercial airport was then Marienberg, which took over from the old Fürth / Nuremberg - Atzenhof airport in 1933. The industrial airfield served as a temporary airport from 1950, until the modern airport (EDNN) opened in 1955. Photo by: René Gardi / ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

Built as 42-23648 and flew with KLM (PH-TBG) after World War II, this C-47 was converted to an executive transport in 1951 by Atlantic Aviation. Utilized by several companies, first as N9997F and later N104E, the aircraft would be registered to Air O'Hare in 1973 as N9BC. On January 1, 1975, it was en route from the Bahamas to Fort Lauderdale on a charter flight when the number one propeller oversped. The engine was shut down, but the remaining engine eventually overheated and lost power. Forced to ditch near Fort Lauderdale, the three people on board were rescued.

VH-EBE was used to carry cattle from Pakistan to Papua New Guinea, then under Australian rule, for a program to develop a better breed for hot tropical climates. The cattle were not allowed into Australia for biosecurity reasons. Biosecurity also meant the cattle had to be kept on the aircraft from Karachi to Port Moresby. While the location of the photo is not given, the airport is not Port Moresby so must be Karachi Photo from: National Library of Australia

Preserved in the "Road of Life" museum on the banks of Lake Ladoga since 1973. The really interesting museum tells a lot about the history of the blockade of St.Petersburg in WWII by German and Finnish troops. This prticular Li-2 was build in 1949 at the factory No.126 Komsomolsk-na-Amure-Dzyomg. Till 1970 she was flying for the Aeroflot divisions North Kavkaz, Kirovograd Advanced Flying Training College and Northern-LED. Previous registrations were CCCP-L4681 and CCCP-84681. The 4681 black was painted on the plane at the museum in the past, but is not present anymore.

Preparing for American's first cargo flight, which they claimed to be the first scheduled cargo flight in the world. Note the Flagship Airfreighter titles. The flight, which took 19 hours, carried more than 2,700 kg of cargo from LaGuardia Field to Burbank, California. This very early DC-3 was delivered as a Douglas Sleeper Transport (DST) in June 1936, before being impressed by the USAAF as 42-56103 in May 1942 and converted to C-49E. The aircraft was returned to American in June 1944 and served with them until sold in August 1947. It eventually crashed on 28 December 1948 en-route from San Juan (PR) to Miami. A65-123 was attached to No. 86 Transport Wing when the wing was transferred to Canberra in a VIP role. 1954 was the year Queen Elizabeth II visited Australia. Due to lack of suitable RAAF aircraft, a Qantas Constellation and a TAA Convair 240 were chartered. But for smaller airports A65-123 was used. It had the Queen's crest in place of the 86 Wing crest. A23-123 continued in a VIP role (with 34 Squadron) until 1968 when it was transferred to the Navy as N2-123. Kangaroo roundels replaced the RAF roundels in 1956.
