BuNo 1813 in flight near New York - NRAB New York was Floyd Bennett Field. This was one of 50 SBC-4s urgently sold to France in June 1940. 44 of the Helldivers were loaded on the French aircraft carrier Bearn in Halifax, having been pulled across the Canadian border at Haulton, Maine to comply with the US Neutrality Act. Upon the fall of France, Béarn put in at Martinique where the aircraft were left to rot by the Vichy administration. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

The SBD-3 Dauntless had been ordered by the French navy before the fall of France in 1940. From late 1943, 32 SBD-5s were delivered to the Aéronavale and some 50 similar A-24B Banshees to the French air force. The A-24s were mostly used as trainers in Morocco, but some did see action during the liberation of France. 254700 is ex 42-54700.

Ended up in a ditch near Amsterdam during a Rome - Paris - London - Amsterdam - Berlin - Munich - Rome tour by six Fiat R.22 and six Ansaldo A.120 aircraft under General Balbo. The pilot, on the right, is Francesco Brack-Papa and his passenger was General Lombardi. 6 July is the accident date. Our thanks to the Historische Kring Diemen for providing the exact location! Italian MM serials existed since 1923 and the 10000-12999 range was for light bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. Apparently the MM prefix was often not painted. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives
