This aircraft is undergoing gradual restoration, its wreckage having been recovered from Lake Balaton, Hungary in the mid-1990s. It is the only Ju-88 night fighter variant extant and one of less than a handful of the type still in existence. It will eventually be fitted with a restored set of wings and engines.

Captured aircraft that was flown to the US via the South Atlantic route. Arrived in the US on November 5. Given the serial FE-106 (foreign equipment) and later FE-1598. Testing ended in 1945 and the final fate the aircraft is unknown. Most sources give the location as Foggia but one suggests Salsola, which was part of the Foggia cluster of airfields. Now closed. In 1943 a Romanian AF pilot defected to Cyprus with this a/c. It was subsequently flown to the U.S. for flight testing at Wright Field in Ohio. It was then put into storage and delivered to the USAF Museum in January 1960. The markings in the slide were the first ones applied by the museum. The a/c is currently on display in the World War 2 Gallery in Romanian AF markings. This slide was taken in the outdoor aircraft display area at the original museum on Patterson AFB.

The airfield at Bad Aibling was built before the war and used for training. Became a PoW camp after the war and then a camp for displaced people. The site next became a Cold War monitoring station for the American military. Finally in 2004 it was returned to German ownership. Its use as an airfield ended with the war. The swastika on the tail looks to have been souvenired. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

The aircraft was initially serialled as BH-QQ, later as 4D-AM. Stationed at Banak (Finnmark) in 1942 with the main task of bombing the Allied convoys between Great Britain and Murmansk. After attacking the 2 Russian navy vessels 'Kiev' and ' Occident', it ran out of fuel during the flight back. The crew bailed near Hammerfest and the aircraft crashed on the Gardevarre mountain. The aircraft was recovered in 1988 and placed on display in about the same way it was found.

Only surviving 'D' model on display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force with a Fritz-X guided bomb under the fuselage. This Fernaufklärer Ju-88 was completed in June 1943. The recce D-1 was similar to the A-4 bomber powered by Jumo 211J engines, but had no dive brakes. It had cameras behind frame 15 and additional fuel tanks inside and under the fuselage which increased the range to 5,000 km. The aircraft was delivered to Romania, an ally of Germany. In July 1943 a lone Romanian pilot defected to Cyprus. The Ju-88 was later handed over by the RAF to the USAAF for testing.
