Visiting from Barkarby. Sweden got 16 new Pembrokes but 83017 and 83018 were ex Danish air force. 83006 and 83017 were painted in this smart blue-and-white livery in 1970 and used as VIP transports. The short-lived warbird Pembroke SE-BKH was painted as 83017, but was another airframe which never served in the Flygvapnet. Photo by: Axel Carleson / Flygvapenmuseum

Finland's new fighter on display at the SILI aero exhibition. Despite its obvious limitations, the Fokker D.21 or D.XXI was a sharp aircraft with a low power loading. Its mixed construction enabled licence production in Finland and Denmark. Finland placed a launch order in 1936 even though the D.21 had been rejected initially by the Netherlands army air arm. A pre-delivery publicity shot of the ill-fated VH-BPE. On October 29, 1953 it flew into the ground while on approach to San Francisco killing all 19 onboard including renowned violinist William Kapell. The accident led to the end of BCPA, owned by the Australian, New Zealand and British governments. Qantas took over the trans-Pacific route and TEAL, a joint NZ-Australian airline, took over BCPA's remaining DC-6s as it prepared to end flying boat services. The prototype XP-87 (Curtiss Model 29A) at what may be its rollout at the factory. The aircraft was dismantled and trucked to Muroc (Edwards AFB) for its first flight in March 1948. A USAF order was cancelled when it was decided the Northrop F-89 would be a better all-weather fighter. Thus ended Curtiss as an aircraft manufacturer and it sold its Columbus factory to North American. The Curtiss-Wright X-19 of 1963, was a tiltwing experiment built by the company's propeller division at Caldwell, New Jersey. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

British ground crews working on Soviet Spitfires in Iran - they were shipped to Basra and transferred to the Russians in nearby Abadan. The Russians didn't like the Spitfire very much. It seems they didn't get the best airframes as BM186 and BL625, the third aircraft, had both met with accidents in RAF service during 1942 and the second, AD236, was a 1941 veteran. These three had already arrived in Basra before the end of 1942. Photo by: Sgt Neill / Imperial War Museums

Helicopters were a rare sight in New Zealand when the HMAS Sydney visited Wellington in May 1955. The first New Zealand owned helicopter, a civil Hiller UH-12, had flown only four months earlier. The Sycamore from 723 Squadron put on a demonstration at Basin Reserve, which is Wellingon's cricket ground. XD656 experienced engine trouble and was forced to ditch into the sea near the submarine HMS Telemachus on November 21, 1957. Photo from: Evening Post / Alexander Turnbull Library
