This is a replica built in 1966/67 by the Royal Canadian Air Forces Aircraft Maintenance and Development Unit using original parts including a 110hp Le Rhone J rotary engine. It was given the registration G-CYEI and was painted to represent one of 52 Avro 504K aerobatic trainers used at the American Expeditionary Force No. 3 Instruction Center, Issoudun, France, in 1918. The type was the first introduction to flying for many USAAS pilots and continued in use after WWI

My late father taking a joy ride over Coventry, Warwickshire, in the Avro 504N (owned by Herbert Basil Goldwyn Michelmore) operated by Tom Campbell-Black's flying circus. He was 15 and it was his first flight. He evidently became "hooked" as he went on to fly Lancasters with No. 626 Sqdn, RAF.

Imagine flying a strategic air raid in an Avro 504. It happened in November 1914 when three machines took off from Belfort with four 20-lb bombs each to attack the Zeppelin works in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, 200 km (125 miles) away. Although the raid was an RNAS affair, the planes were RFC serials 873, 874 and 875. RFC 179 failed to get airborne. Some of the pilots had never flown a 504 before. 873 was shot down and Squadron Commander Edward Briggs was taken prisoner. The raid caused little damage, but was successful in that the Germans took extensive defensive measures. Belfort - Fontaine was then an airship station. The RAAF Museum's Avro 504K is a replica constructed from the original drawings by Hawker Restorations in the UK in 1999 using original fittings, instruments and Le Rhône engine. It is flyable and was registered G-BYKV. Painted as E3747, it represents one of the 20 received by the Australian Flying Corps in 1919 for the Central Flying School. Only one original Australian Avro 504 survives, E3-4 which was placed at the Australian War Memorial near Canberra as long ago as 1929
