The Avro 504L was originally a seaplane - note the added tailfin. This was one of six such aircraft constructed from spares by A.V. Roe at Hamble in 1919. G-EANB sold to Sweden as S-IAA and based in remote Porjus on behalf of a hydropower project. The logo still visible on the fin is associated with this. To S-ABAA and sold to AB Göteborgs Luftdroskor (Gothenburg Air Taxi). Photo, published in a newspaper on 5 June 1923, taken at the old Tingstadsvassen airfield which was then being replaced by Torslanda. Photo from: Museum of Gothenburg

The Fairey Barracuda was still in Fleet Air Arm service in the early 1950s but not with first-line units. The GN code belonged to No 737 Sqn, based at RNAS Eglinton in Northern Ireland in 1950-51. It is not explained what this aircraft was doing in Sweden. Photo by: Georg Eriksson / Flygvapenmuseum

Finland's new fighter on display at the SILI aero exhibition. Despite its obvious limitations, the Fokker D.21 or D.XXI was a sharp aircraft with a low power loading. Its mixed construction enabled licence production in Finland and Denmark. Finland placed a launch order in 1936 even though the D.21 had been rejected initially by the Netherlands army air arm. First flown in 1937, the Be-51 was the enclosed-cockpit version of the Walter Minor-powered Beneš-Mráz Be-50 Beta. This aircraft visited Finland for the opening of Malmi and the SILI aviation exhibition. A photo taken at SILI reveals the hitherto unknown c/n 23, painted on the nose. The second Grumman Goose, owned by Henry Morgan, one of ten affluent Long Island businessmen who requested the design of the G-21. Morgan's wife and friends made a trip all the way to Texas in the aircraft. Like other early Geese it was acquired by the Canadian air force in 1940. It crashed at Nassau in the Bahamas in 1947 as VP-BAE. Photo from: San Antonio Light / University of Texas at San Antonio

A pre-delivery publicity shot of the ill-fated VH-BPE. On October 29, 1953 it flew into the ground while on approach to San Francisco killing all 19 onboard including renowned violinist William Kapell. The accident led to the end of BCPA, owned by the Australian, New Zealand and British governments. Qantas took over the trans-Pacific route and TEAL, a joint NZ-Australian airline, took over BCPA's remaining DC-6s as it prepared to end flying boat services.
