A Blenheim Mk.V, initially known as the Bisley, fitted with an under-nose gun position. Note that, unlike the Mk.IV, the Mk.V cross section in front of the cockpit is symmetrical from just behind the nose to the windshield. The type was used by Bomber and Coastal Commands (who operated this example). It was built by Avro and Rootes in addition to Bristols, from whom photo was obtained.

This was the prototype Don training aircraft which first flew from Hatfield on 18 June 1937. The cabin allowed the type to be used as a radio trainer and the rotatable rear turret was used by gunnery trainees. Only 30 Dons were completed and all had been withdrawn by 1941. Obtained from DH 60 years ago.

The vast majority of Lancasters were powered by the inline Merlin engine. This is one of 200 powered by the Bristol Hercules radial engine. They were built in 1942/43 by Armstrong Whitworth as an insurance against shortages of Merlins. DS778 was flown by 408 (Canadian) Squadron based at RAF Balderton, Notts. It was lost on a raid on Kassel on 23 October 1943. From AWA 60 years ago.

The Spearfish was a large anti-submarine and naval bombing aircraft powered by a Bristol Centaurus piston engine. Only five were built before the programme was cancelled in favour of the upcoming turboprop Gannet. RN241 was the first of two completed at Fairey's Ringway facility. None of the type survives. The Bicentennial Air Show was a rare chance for Australians to see a Tornado. The logistics of bringing a fighter aircraft from Europe means going the long way round, via the US, or skilled diplomacy. Either way it involves long flights aided by tankers. A Tristar accompanied the Tornado visit.

Allocated USAF 66-8567 but not used, to RAF XV217 as a C1 delivered Nov-1967, converted to C3 mid-1982, converted to C3P May-1986, withdrawn from use Jul-2010 and sold, roaded to Hixon Jan-2011 where it was scrapped Sep-2014. It is serving here as the Red Arrows support aircraft, a dull grey aircraft on a dull grey day!
