Reminding me of the regular visits by the Calie Brits to Southend for ATEL, this one looks as though it's straining to make one final take-off. First flight was on the last day of 1956 as a series 311; converted to 312 (later to 319) and to BOAC 7 months later. Became 9G-AAH with Ghana Airways 11.60 then to British Eagle 1.64; leased by Caledonian 3.69 and reduced to spares by 10.71

Looking very smart in RAF Air Support Command's unique sand camo, this Argosy carrying the cobra emblem of 114 Sqdn was an unusual visitor to Southend, although the type did make appearances at the splendid airshows there in 1968 and 1970. Starting life as CX-AOV with PLUNA in 3.54 and enjoying long and varied service including Gulf Aviation, this Heron had recently been registered 9Q-CRL when bought by Channel in 6.69. Soon after, they announced a name change to Air England but this was the only a/c painted as such. Used on feeder services SEN-NWI-EMA. To Peters 5.72 then 5B-CCD, returning to Peters and on to Fairflight in 1977. Bought by Sky of Siam 3.80 as HS-EAA and stored at BKK from 1983; wreck said still to be extant around 2000

This Avro C.19 was registered to Avro in 1945 and was a well-known part of the Southend scene while being used by local firm Ekco from 10.67 with its bulbous nose for avionics trials. Went into the ill-fated Historic Air Museum there and sold for £2800 when it closed; now under restoration at the old Hooton Park Aerodrome, Ellesmere Port

Still in its olive drab after operating in the Biafran conflict when photographed, this DC-6 served with Western, JAL and Transavia beforehand. Registered as N120AC in 1979, she was impounded in Colombia and joined the Fuerza Aerea Colombiana - see my shot of FAC902

The second of 13 of these twin-PT6A turboprop conversions of the de Havilland Heron, developed with some input from ATEL at Southend. This airframe had an illustrious history as it was previously Queen's Flight Heron C.4 XM295 delivered in 4.58. Went on to fly with Air Atonabee but all ST-27s were withdrawn by the early Eighties. The ST-28 was an unsuccessful development which was to be built from scratch due to a shortage of suitable Heron airframes

Beginning life as Jersey Airlines' "Duchess of Alderney" in 7.54, this Heron became part of the Morton Air Services fleet and in 1966 was leased to Sierra Leone Airways as 9L-LAI. Morton merged into British United in 1968 and the aircraft is seen here after acquisition by Executive Air Engineering. Served Peters Aviation for the rest of the 1970s but ended up with St Lucia Airways from 1980, the fuselage later being sunk as a diving wreck

Some great shots of this machine can be found elsewhere online, but here she is at one stage of her dismemberment. This, the penultimate Britannia built, was delivered originally to Canadian Pacific in 1959. The once-proud ex-Eagle bird was to have become HB-ITF. Glad I talked my dad into diverting there all those years ago...

A Handley Page Victor is evident under the tail, awaiting conversion to K Mk2 tanker status. This was my place of work, where cameras were prohibited a rule that did not seem to be enforced the day before the Airshow was on. Very little work seemed to be done either!
