A Fairey Albacore I of No 820 Sqn during the Allied landings in North Africa, presumably seen taking off from the aircraft carrier HMS Formidable. British forces were in the Eastern Task Force which landed at Algiers. On 17 November, an Albacore of No 820 sank the submarine U-333. The aircrew were unware that the U-boat had already surrendered. Written off after a forced landing at Redcliffe in Perth on October 11, 1933. Photo likely towards the beginning of the date range. The word AIRWAYS was not on the nose when it crashed. The unreliability of the engines fitted had seen WAA fit different versions of the Jupiter and different propellers, often on one side only. Photo from: State Library of Western Australia

Qantas' connection with the Liberator came in World War II when they were used non-stop between Australia and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as part of a UK- Australia air link. A couple were retained after the war as stopgap transports until more suitable airliners arrived. Photo from: National Library of Australia

The only flying example of the Merganser five-passenger transport. The reason given for its failure is that the Gipsy Queen 51 engine was not put in production. Further development led to the Percival Prince and Pembroke. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

42-65414 was the only C-74 used on the Berlin Airlift, landing at Gatow for the first time on 17 August 1948, carrying 20 tons of flour. The aircraft made six round trips from Frankfurt within 24 hours on 18 September, carrying coal, but was withdrawn after only 25 trips in six weeks, being too dissimilar from the regular aircraft flow. It was then used to transport C-54 engines and parts from the USA to Germany. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
