Albacore in flight. The markings place it around 1940. Possibly L7075 but I could be wrong. Scanned from an original reproduced photograph by Westland Aircraft Ltd dated Mar 1963, (wet stamped to rear) from my collection, photographer unknown.

A Fairey Albacore I of No 820 Sqn during the Allied landings in North Africa, presumably seen taking off from the aircraft carrier HMS Formidable. British forces were in the Eastern Task Force which landed at Algiers. On 17 November, an Albacore of No 820 sank the submarine U-333. The aircrew were unware that the U-boat had already surrendered. First time for me to see an Albacore so this was probably the hightlight from my visit to the FAA Museum's Reserve Collection at Cobham Hall. This is the only surviving example but is actually a beautifully restored composite of two aircraft that were wrecked in 1941, N4172 & N4389. The former crashed in 1941 at A'Mhoine, Whiten Head, Sutherland and the latter was shot down near Reinøya whilst taking part in the raid on Kirkenes

Albacore anti-submarine biplane passing through Ringway on delivery from one unit to another. Flown by a veteran man or woman pilot of the Ringway-based 14 Ferry Pool, Air Tansport Auxiliary. Note the bomb racks fitted below the lower wings. Photo obtained 50 years ago.

Of about 800 Albacores built, this is believed to be the only survivor. The type first flew in 1938 as a torpedo and dive-bomber, designed to replace the Swordfish though ultimately it was withdrawn before the aircraft it was designed to replace. It is seen in Cobham Hall, the Fleet Air Arm Museum Reserve Collection
