The fifth L-14. Happy with the L-10, Northwest Airlines was the launch customer for the L-14, which it called the Sky Zephyr. Four Sky Zephyrs crashed, however, between January 1938 and January 1939, and the type was phased out in the summer of 1939. Normally Northwest didn't fly farther east than Chicago back then, but here NC17386 is seen in Boston for reasons unknown. NC17386 to TACA of Honduras as XH-TEG. To PP-AVA of Aerovias Brasil. Crashed on 13 February 1943. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

Last preparations for a flight around the world by Howard Hughes and crew, in 71 flying hours between 10 and 14 July 1938. The stages were between New York, Paris, Moscow, Omsk, Yakutsk, Fairbanks, Minneapolis and New York - too northern a route to qualify for an official record. This Super Electra was shipped to Britain in August 1940 according to the Rudy Arnold files. Apparently bought by the RAF, it crashed in Nairobi as AX688 on 10 November 1940. Supplied to the RAF under lend-lease as FK779. Registered to Canadian Pacific Airways on 28 March 1946 then sold to Photographic Survey Co. Ltd. of Toronto and finally as above. Ultimate fate unknown. [Note how in a world prior to the black plastic garbage bag, an old newspaper has been used to blank off the removed hatch or window!]
