C-87s were converted from B-24Ds at the factory and suffered from unreliable systems. Operated by Consolidated subsidiary Consairways, 41-11706 crashed into a mountain on Nggela Sule (Florida Island) on approach to Guadalcanal en route for Brisbane on 28 July 1944. Not a very clear slide, but it does show "Diamond Lil" in the configuration as acquired by the CAF from PEMEX Oil Co. of Mexico in 1968 (ex XC-CAY), registered N12905 at the time. It became N24927 in October 1990.

This was the last B-24 on active service in the USAF, retiring in 1953. It was used for icing research. This aircraft went to the American Air Museum, Duxford, England in 1999. At Lackland it was replaced by a full-scale replica.

Originally built for the RAF as AM927 (USAAF contract s/n 40-2366.) After a mishap while still in the U.S. it was rebuilt and became the prototype for the C-87 cargo version of the B-24.

Built as 44-44272

On the night of 17 October, 1944, callsign "Sugar" of 547 Squadron took off from RAF Leuchars to conduct anti-U Boat patrols north of Cape Wrath. However, a defective compass resulted in this mission ending in tragedy in the Angus hills. Of the eleven crewmen, just four survived when the aircraft struck the hillside in poor weather. The largest part of the wreckage - a section of the fuselage - still remains at the site, whilst other smaller pieces lie strewn amongst the heather and peat near the summit.

ex USAAF 44-50206, RAF KN751 and Indian AF HE807. Most Liberators that were delivered to the RAF in the Far East took the Azores trans Atlantic route and than via Africa to India. The SNAKE addition to the serial indicated this aircraft was on delivery to the Far East and was not to be retained in the Middle East while on transit.

Handed over to the RAF in May 1941, but remained based at Albuquerque, NM for training of RAF pilots by TWA instructors. Damaged in a landing accident in Jun 1941. Rebuilt as an RLB-30 with a solid keel (no bomb bay doors) and loaned to Consolidated for pax & cargo flights between their production plants in the USA. Operated with USAAF roundels as seen here, but reason unknown as still British-owned. Ownership transferred to Consolidated and registered to them as NL24927 on 1 Apr 1947. Sold to the Continental Can Company as an executive aircraft on 10 Nov 1948 as N1503. Became XC-CAY with PEMEX on 4 Nov 1959, then to N12905 with the Confederate Air Force in Jun 1968. Reregistered N24927 in Oct 1990 and was still flying as such by 2019.

In 1951, the Continental Can Company built a large timber hangar at Morristown to house its executive Liberator Express. Barely visible in this photo is the company's logo on the forward fuselage. At a London airfield, exiled Dutch Queen Wilhelmina greets her daughter Juliana who returns from her safe house in Canada, VVIP enough to use Churchill's personal Liberator. Commando had a bed and a galley installed. It was converted with a PB4Y-2 Privateer single tailfin and a solid nose earlier in 1944.
