Airlines in Botswana is an interesting story. Bechuanaland National Airways existed between 1965 and 1966 before going out of business. Then in 1966 Botswana National Airways entered the stage. However, they lasted only three years. In 1970 and 1971 it was Botswana Airways. Since 1972 it has been Air Botswana. VQ-ZEG is seen here at Lusaka in June of 1968 having been delivered in January. It was reregistered A2-ZEQ in June/July of that year. Photographer unknown

During the Rhodesian and Border Wars, the South African Air Force kept a low profile with no national markings. The last number(s) of the serial were stenciled on the nose. This is 6859 a Dakota that was delivered to the RAF in March 1944. The following year 6859 went to the SAAF where she was active with 28, 44 and 60 Sqds for 49 years. When the USA refused export license for further C-130s for South Africa, they turned to France and bought nine Transall C-160Z which arrived between July 1969 and December 1970. They served with 28 Sqd at AFB Waterkloof alongside the Hercules until the fleet was retired at the end of 1992. This discrete Transall is seen landing at Phalaborwa in the then Transvaal (now Limpopo), home to the 7th South African Infantry Battalion. Photographer unknown

The story of this Stratofreighters differs slightly from the others that Balair source for the Biafran airlift. As can be seen from the faded Joint Church Aid titles under the ICRC titles, she originally served with the churches' airlift before being made available for the ICRC. It is unclear whether she flew for them as she only carried those titles as short period during the winter of 1970. Photographer unknown
