During the Rhodesian and Border Wars, the South African Air Force kept a low profile with no national markings. The last number(s) of the serial were stenciled on the nose. This is 6859 a Dakota that was delivered to the RAF in March 1944. The following year 6859 went to the SAAF where she was active with 28, 44 and 60 Sqds for 49 years. In 1994 she was transferred to the SAAF Museum in flying condition. Here seen landing at Phalaborwa in the then Transvaal (now Limpopo), home to the 7th South African Infantry Battalion. Built as 42-93432, this Dakota was delivered to the Royal Canadian Air Force as 969 May 23, 1944. It served long enough to get new serial number 12953 when the Air Force re-organized aircraft aerials in 1970. Stored in Saskatoon, SK in March 1975, it was with Ilford Riverton Airways by October 1975 as C-GWYX. Last with Central Mountain Air from February 1989, the aircraft experienced an engine fire on approach to Bronson Creek, BC May 21, 1989. The fire would not go out and a forced landing was made. Both pilots escaped unhurt, but the aircraft was destroyed by fire.

Arriving in Great Britain it was used by BOAC (G-AGHO) from August 1943 - June 1949 when it was returned and sold to Northwest Airlines as N9993F. It came to Canada in May 1951 for the Royal Canadian Air Force (10910), before going civil again with Austin Airways as CF-AAM September 28, 1970. Central Mountain Air bought the aircraft in January 1989. Sadly, C-FAAM crashed on take off at Bronson Creek, BC January 14, 1993.

Ex USAAF 42-92139, RAF FL547, Trans-Canada Air Lines, Transair. Withdrawn from service by Lambair in 1970 still in its Transair livery and donated to the Western Canada Aviation Museum. The wings were crudely hacked off and the aircraft was moved to a farm at Selkirk, Manitoba. It later returned to Winnipeg Airport and was put in the long grass near the perimeter fence. Research into its brief wartime military history revealed a strong link to the Polish forces and it has now found a home in Poland where it will be restored as FL547.
