Mangere was Auckland's civil airport before WW2. Taken over by the RNZAF during war as seen here. Only a communications flight based there. Returned to civil control in September 1944. Airline operations moved to RNZAF Whenuapai in 1947 as Mangere's grass runways were inadequate for newer aircraft. GA remained. When Whenuapai was unable to handle 707s and DC-8s, Mangere was chosen as site of new airport. The old airport was closed and cleared along with surrounding houses. GA operators moved to Ardmore. Blenheim Mk.IF night fighters were the first aircraft equipped with radar. The unit is almost certainly No 604 Sqn. L6807 was one of the first IFs with this squadron in November 1939. The second aircraft, L6607, was at one time NG-A and appears to be wearing that 604 Sqn code. Photo by: William Vandivert / Life
